Where to travel in Q1
To design next year’s travel itinerary, let us use the LTM period for the Healthcare sector as a proxy. During this period, more than 1,200 deals traded, with 53% representing new platform investments.
Looking at the map pulled from the SPS Portal, most Healthcare deals took place in the Acela-Corridor (Washington, DC to Boston) during this period. With that in mind, it would be prudent to buy a train ticket and canvas the East coast for Healthcare deals in the first quarter.
Where are the intermediaries and professionals located?
For the intermediaries involved in a Healthcare transaction during this twelve-month period, most firms are headquartered in New York (25%), Chicago (6%), Toronto (6%), Boston (4%), and Minneapolis (3%). However, the top five most active intermediaries for Healthcare deals are more interesting, as indicated by the league table below. Most of these firms are headquartered on the east coast, and I would say the top two might deserve a visit in the first quarter, as they do not typically break the top forty in a league table, and likely have a strong healthcare focus.
For professionals in the healthcare space, the top locations are New York (18%), Chicago (11%), Boston (7%), San Francisco (5%), and Atlanta (5%). As we often tell clients, where a firm is headquartered is not indicative of where its professionals are located. To that point, the top three most active professionals in healthcare during the last twelve months are all from the same company, the Braff Group. Yet, Braff is headquartered in Pittsburgh, PA and all three of these professionals are located in different places including Chicago, Marietta, GA, and Roswell, Ga. When planning travel to meet specific dealmakers, it is helpful to know the exact location of the professional, not just the company’s headquarters.
